The first conditional

 

 

The type 1 conditional or first conditional in English is used to refer to a real or possible situation. We usually use this conditional to make warnings, to express facts or to make statements about reality and about particular situations. / El condicional de tipo 1 o primer condicional en inglés sirve para hacer referencia a una situación real o posible. Solemos emplear este condicional para realizar advertencias, para expresar hechos o para hacer afirmaciones sobre la realidad y sobre situaciones particulares.

 

We use conditional 1 to talk about a real possibility in the future; that is, from an action that is likely to occur in the future as long as the condition is met. / Utilizamos el condicional 1 para hablar de una posibilidad real en el futuro; es decir, de una acción que es posible que ocurra en el futuro siempre y cuando se cumpla la condición. 

 

 

Structure / Estructura

 

El primer condicional tiene la siguiente estructura:

If + sujeto + presente simple + sujeto + will + verbo en infinitivo (sin to)

La proposición acompañada por “If” será en presente simple y la parte de la oración que refleje el resultado será en futuro simple.

 

 

IF	Condición	Resultado
If	Present Simple	Future Simple (will)
If	this thing happens,	that thing will happen

 

Example:

Una amiga me pidió el favor de ayudarla a estudiar para un examen que se realizará mañana; yo no sé si pueda ayudarla porque no sé si tengo que trabajar mañana, entonces yo le digo:

If I have time tomorrow,  I will help you. (Si tengo tiempo mañana, te ayudaré)

If + sujeto + presente simple, + sujeto + will + verbo en infinitivo (sin to)

 

(Recordemos que en el zero conditional podemos iniciar primero con el resultado y luego la condición, así mismo empleamos el primer condicional)

 

Example:

       I       will   help you                                  if        i            have time    (te ayudaré si tengo tiempo)

 sujeto + will + verbo en infinitivo (sin to)       If + sujeto + presente simple

Other examples:

a) If you come to the party, you will meet my sister. (Si vienes a la fiesta, conocerás a mi hermana)
b) If she gets home late, I will be very angry. (Si ella llega a la casa tarde, estaré muy enojado)
